How to Use GPS on a Smartwatch: A Complete Guide for Outdoor Adventures

Introduction

GPS isn't just for recording your running route. When used correctly, it can help you navigate hiking trails, measure distance accurately, and even find your way back when exploring unfamiliar places.

In this guide, you'll learn how to set up GPS, choose the right workout mode, improve positioning accuracy, and use offline maps effectively.

Step 1: Enable GPS on your smartwatch

Enabling GPS is simple, but the specific steps may vary slightly depending on the watch model.

Leadoys Smartwatch: Find "Workout," select your activity mode, such as outdoor hiking. The GPS interface will appear. Alternatively, in the four modes of outdoor running, outdoor walking, outdoor cycling, and mountain climbing, GPS will automatically recognize your activity mode and prompt you to start exercising.

Step 2: Wait for GPS Lock

Why Do You Need to Wait?

GPS doesn’t start tracking immediately when you turn it on. Your watch needs time to find and connect to satellites.

This is called “GPS Lock.”

What's happening behind the scenes:

Your watch is scanning for GPS satellites orbiting Earth

It needs to receive signals from at least 4 satellites to calculate your location

The more satellites it connects to, the more accurate your position.

How long does it takes?

Tips: Always wait for the GPS icon to stop blinking and become solid before you start moving. This ensures accurate tracking from the very beginning.

Step 3: Choose the Correct Workout Mode

Selecting the right mode is important—it affects how your watch records data like pace, distance, and altitude.

Common Workout Modes on Leadoys Smartwatches:

Outdoor Running

Cycling

Outdoor Walking

Hiking / Mountaineering

Note: These modes are ideal for offline maps

How to Select Workout Mode:

Press the side button to enter the menu

Scroll to find “Workout” or “Sports”

Select the mode that matches your activity

Wait for GPS lock (if outdoors)

Press “Start”to begin recording

Step 4: Start Recording Your Activity

Once GPS is locked and you've selected your workout mode, it's time to start moving.

Below are the procedures for X2Pro from positioning to recording activity:

Step 5: Use Offline Maps (If Available)

Offline maps are pre-downloaded map data stored on your watch. They allow you to see your location and route even when you have no Wi-Fi or cellular signal.

Which Leadoys Model Supports Offline Maps?

Currently, the Leadoys X2 Pro supports offline maps. Other models (like X2, X5, C31, C32 Pro) do not support offline maps—they can track and display your GPS route, but do not show specific location names or detailed map backgrounds.

How to Download Offline Maps (X2 Pro):

1: Connect your watch to the Leadoys App via Bluetooth.

2: In the App, go to “Device” → “Map Management.”

3: Select the area where you‘ll be exercising and download the map.

4: Tap “Download map to device.”

5: Rename the map for easy identification.

6: Wait for the transfer to complete. The App will display: “Transfer successful, use it on your device now.”

7: Go to “Map Management”on your watch to confirm the map is available.

Note: Offline maps still require a GPS signal to show your position. They only remove the need for internet—they do not replace GPS satellites.

Step 6: Finish and Review Your Activity

After you've finished your run, hike, or ride, it's time to review your performance.

You can view:

Summary stats (distance, time, pace, calories)

GPS route map (with elevation profile)

Split times for each kilometer/mile

Heart rate graph (showing trends during your activity)

Pace analysis (fastest and slowest segments)

Also can view training performance, such as training load and recovery time.

Common Problems & How to Fix Them

GPS is "Searching" and Never Locks

Possible causes:

- You're indoors or in an area with poor sky visibility

- GPS was just turned on (cold start)

- Signal interference from buildings or dense trees

Solutions:

Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky

Wait 1–2 minutes and try again

Restart the GPS or restart the watch

Turn off and on the GPS function in quick settings

GPS Track is Inaccurate (Drifting Off Route)

Possible causes:

High-rise buildings or dense forest blocking signals

GPS didn't lock before you started moving

You're moving too fast (in the bus, cyclying) and the watch can't keep up

Solutions:

Always wait for GPS lock before starting

Use your watch in open areas where possible

If the issue persists, try restarting the watch

For better accuracy in challenging areas, consider a watch with dual-band GPS (like the  Leadoys X5Leadoys X2ProLeadoys X2    )

Offline Map Download Fails

Possible causes:

Unstable or interrupted network connection

Low watch battery (some models require the watch to be charging)

Insufficient storage space on the watch

App version is outdated

Solutions:

Check your Wi-Fi connection and try again

Ensure your watch has at least 30% battery

Free up storage by removing old maps

Update the Leadoys App to the latest version

GPS Drains Battery Too Quickly

Why it happens:

-  GPS is one of the most power-hungry features on any smartwatch

Continuous satellite communication consumes significant energy

Screen map rendering adds extra power consumption

High screen brightness increases power draw

Solutions:

Lower screen brightness when using GPS

Use “GPS power-saving mode” (if available on your model)

Turn off “Always-On Display” when using GPS tracking

Carry a portable power bank for long outdoor activities

Offline Map Shows Blank Screen or No Location

Possible causes:

You are not within the downloaded map area

GPS has not locked yet

Map was not successfully transferred to the watch

Solutions:

Check your position—are you inside the downloaded map area?

Wait for GPS lock before opening the map

-  Re-download and transfer the map to your watch

Conclusion

GPS on a smartwatch is a powerful tool—but only when you use it correctly. By following the steps in this guide, you'll get more accurate tracking, and a better overall experience.
